As a writer I believe there are always stories in us, it’s
just a matter of time before they come out.
Sometimes life gets in the way; other times it’s just you and me who get
in the way of what we want. The Unlikely
Suitor is a story inspired by life and people.
Well aren’t all stories inspired by life and people?
Let me start by
saying that The Unlikely Suitor is my take on love in a contemporary Indian
setting.
In India where arranged
marriages have been the norm and the matchmaker has been an intrinsic part of
the social fabric, more and more young people are taking control of looking for
suitable match. The web has empowered
them to look for love online.
Why Online
Matchmaking? More often than not
family and friends often spoke about how difficult it was to find a match for
their children. Cousins spoke of fake
profiles and dicey prospects in their experiences with online matchmaking. Some were lucky enough to find love online,
others, well they weren’t so lucky!
What Intrigued Me?
What I found both interesting and inspiring was that looking for a partner is a
process influenced by many factors.
There are things that you want, things that your family wants for you
and things that your prospective partner wants as well. Finding that perfect balance might be
slightly tricky online. At the same time
it might prove to be interesting and illuminating.
Who Inspired Me? I
wrote story for The Unlikely Suitor about six years ago. Though I’d written it and it was at best a
rough draft I never thought about sending it out to a publisher until last
year. A conversation with one of the most important
persons in my life about my interest in writing threw up a suggestion that maybe
I should write a book.
That was when it struck me!
I had this story in me waiting to be told and I had to get
it out there. Thank you S.D. for
believing in me and urging me to write.
So here it is The Unlikely Suitor, a look at love in
contemporary times where Sarah, the protagonist of the novella takes her search
for a suitor online. Unwittingly that
becomes her first step towards discovering herself. Will she find love online? Will it be what she thinks it will be?
